Disturbance history is a key driver of tree life span in temperate primary forests

چکیده
Aims We examined differences in life span among the dominant tree species (spruce, Picea abies; fir, Abies alba; beech, Fagus sylvatica; and maple, Acer pseudoplatanus) across primary mountain forests of Europe. asked how disturbance history, lifetime growth patterns, environmental factors influence span. Locations Balkan Mountains, Carpathian Dinaric Mountains. Methods Annual ring widths from 20,600 cores were used to estimate spans, trends, history metrics. Mixed models examine species-specific (i.e., defined as 90th percentiles age distributions), metrics radial growth, parameters, selected Results While only a few beech trees surpassed 500 years, individuals all four older than 400 years. There significant (beech > fir spruce maple), indicating differentiation Trees less likely reach old areas affected by more severe events, whereas that experienced periods slow multiple episodes suppression release age. Aside weak but negative effect vegetation season temperature on maple span, no other included analysis influenced Conclusions Our results indicate biological which may play role facilitating coexistence mixed temperate forests. Finally, natural regimes key driver could have implications for forest dynamics if shift under global change.

Tree age, disturbance history, and carbon stocks and fluxes in subalpine Rocky Mountain forests
Forest carbon stocks and fluxes vary with forest age, and relationships with forest age are often used to estimate fluxes for regional or national carbon inventories. Two methods are commonly used to estimate forest age: observed tree age or time since a known disturbance. To clarify the relationships between tree age, time since disturbance and forest carbon storage and cycling, we examined st...
متن کاملMultiple Browsers Structure Tree Recruitment in Logged Temperate Forests
Historical extirpations have resulted in depauperate large herbivore assemblages in many northern forests. In eastern North America, most forests are inhabited by a single wild ungulate species, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and relationships between deer densities and impacts on forest regeneration are correspondingly well documented. Recent recolonizations by moose (Alces americ...
متن کاملFragmentation, disturbance and tree diversity conservation in tropical montane forests
1. Loss in forest cover associated with human activities leads to forest islands within a fragmented landscape. Anthropogenic disturbance may also directly alter tree species diversity. Habitat fragmentation and disturbance may have implications for biodiversity conservation and can affect a variety of population and community processes over a range of temporal and spatial scales. Effects are m...
متن کاملTree species distribution in temperate forests is more influenced by soil than by climate
Knowledge of the ecological requirements determining tree species distributions is a precondition for sustainable forest management. At present, the abiotic requirements and the relative importance of the different abiotic factors are still unclear for many temperate tree species. We therefore investigated the relative importance of climatic and edaphic factors for the abundance of 12 temperate...
متن کاملsecuritization of mortality risks in life annuities
insurers have in the past few decades faced longevity risks - the risk that annuitants survive more than expected - and therefore need a new approach to manage this new risk. in this dissertation we survey methods that hedge longevity risks. these methods use securitization to manage risk, so using modern financial and insurance pricing models, especially wang transform and actuarial concepts, ...
